Relationship Coaching Explained

Relationship coaching in simple terms is a type of coaching that helps people improve a variety of relationships within their lives. This can, and does, include romantic and intimate relationships as well as with family, friends, and coworkers. It is collaborative and personalized with the aim of achieving meaningful changes.

Generally speaking, coaching is guiding individuals to find their own motivation and strategies for change that effect lasting and meaningful improvements in their lives. It is provided in a semi-structured framework offering reflection, learning, and experimentation.

Relationship coaches support clients in enhancing their relationship attitudes, acquiring essential skills, and fostering personal growth in the context of their romantic, emotional, and even working partnerships. The coach can help individuals identify areas of interpersonal awareness and growth and focus on action skills, attitudes, and learning how to relate effectively to and with others.

The main benefit of working with a relationship coach is the clarity of feedback you receive from them. They can alert you about the way you are being perceived by others and give you tools to change.

This is a collaborative process wherein the coach and client will develop, test, and refine strategies to achieve the client’s goals.

Components of this process include but are not limited to:

  • Identification of the relationship challenges, attitudes and perceptions including:
  • Conflicting or confused priorities
  • Misunderstandings of how others perceive them
  • Inflexibility and difficulty compromising
  • Struggles with coping and imperfections in others
  • Poor conflict management
  • Encouragement of experiential learning; typically focusing on experiences and prior knowledge.
